About Me

Hello, I'm Gemma.

I am a Midwife, Birth Educator, Birth Rewind Practitioner, storyteller and advocate for women.

For 16 years, I have worked alongside women and families through some of the most significant moments of their lives. From pregnancy and birth to loss, healing and transformation, I have witnessed both the extraordinary strength of women and the profound impact that birth experiences can have.

My journey into midwifery began with a deep belief that women deserve compassionate, individualised care and honest information. Over the years I have worked across a variety of maternity settings, including community teams, birth centres, continuity models and leadership roles within the NHS.

Midwifery has given me the privilege of standing alongside women at their most vulnerable, powerful and transformative moments. It has also shown me where systems work well, and where they fall short.

Again and again, I have seen how much women need time, space and support to understand their experiences.

That belief sits at the heart of everything I do.

The Alternative Midwife

The Alternative Midwife was created to offer something that is often difficult to find in modern healthcare: time.

Time to talk.

Time to ask questions.

Time to prepare.

Time to reflect.

Time to heal.

Whether I am supporting someone during pregnancy, helping them make sense of a previous birth, or working with women carrying difficult memories from the past, my role is not to tell people what to do.

My role is to listen, inform, support and empower.

I believe women deserve access to evidence-based information, genuine choice and compassionate care.

Most of all, I believe every woman deserves to feel heard.

Beyond Midwifery

Alongside my clinical work, I have developed a growing interest in storytelling, birth literacy and the role that women's voices play in shaping how we understand birth.

This passion has led to the development of Let's Talk About Birth, a creative project exploring birth through stories, conversations and lived experiences.

At its heart is a simple idea: birth matters, and so do the stories we tell about it.

I am also involved in collaborative arts projects that explore motherhood, women's experiences and community through voice and song in creative practice.

My Approach

My work is grounded in compassion, curiosity and respect.

There is no one right way to give birth.

No perfect birth.

No single path through motherhood.

Every woman arrives with her own experiences, beliefs, hopes and fears.

I believe support should honour that individuality.

Whether you are preparing for birth, reflecting on a previous experience or seeking support following trauma, you will find a space where your story is welcomed and your voice matters.

A Little More About Me

Outside of my work, I am a mother, a nature lover, a writer-in-progress and someone who continues to learn through her own experiences of womanhood, health, change and healing.

Like many women, I understand that life rarely moves in a straight line.

The experiences that shape us often become the experiences that deepen our capacity to support others.

Thank you for being here.

I look forward to meeting you.
